The second movie version, now in color, of Flemish (heimat-)author Ernest Claes' classical novel, titled after the nickname (Dutch 'the White', referring to a blond male) of the main character. The smart but naughty farmhands son's eternal mischief, pranks and disobedience drive his elders (especially teachers, family and father's grumpy employer, a rich farmer, but also neighbors and even the kind curate whose liturgical server he is) and classmates to despair in a time when a boy's punishment was still inevitable, swift and often severe; thus when his mother catches him skinny dipping she takes all his clothes home, forcing him to a long walk of shame, dreading dad's wrath all the way. This version also stresses the story's social and Flamingant aspects.

 Фильм снят  по роману Леонардаса Гутаускаса и повествует об известном литовском художнике. У него творческий застой и в поисках вдохновения он вспоминает своё детство, которое прошло в эпоху сталинизма. Отца арестовали как врага государства и отправили в сибирскую тюрьму, мать, что бы выжить должна заниматься проституцией и когда семья наконец воссоединяеться оказывается что они все стали совершенно чужими людьми...
A famed Lithuanian painter expresses the torment of his youth through his paintings. But lately, even his work provides no solace, for he falls into a deep mid-life crises and can find no inspiration. This grim, earnest and arty drama looks back upon his formative years, the joy of which were destroyed by Stalin's policies. The darkness began for him when his father was arrested for being an enemy of the state and sent to a Siberian prison. The boy and his remaining family become social pariahs, and the only way his mother can support them is to prostitute herself to the local police and politicians. Eventually the young painter is sent to the countryside, but even there, he cannot escape the fear and oppression. To cope, he becomes hard and cynical; his mother too changes dramatically and when the father finally returns home, he finds himself among virtual strangers.

 В маленьком провинциальном городишке живут 6-летний Стефек и его 17-летняя сестра Элька, отец давно ушел от их мамы, ещё до рождения Стефека, к другой женщине, и поэтому пацан его даже никогда не видел. Однако он уверен, что мужчина с портфелем, каждое утро пересаживающийся с одной электрички на другую на их станции - это его папа и что его можно вернуть, если приманить к себе счастье или подкупить его...

Stefek (Damian UI) is a bright and very observant six-year-old boy who lives with his teenage sister Elka (Ewelina Walendziak) and their mother (Iwona Fornalczyk) in a Polish village outside of Warsaw. Stefan has never seen his father (Tomasz Sapryk) who abandoned the family before he was born but thinks he recognizes him from a defaced picture in his wallet as the man boards a train each morning. Andrzej Jakimowski's Tricks is one of those rare films that you wish would never end. Winner of the Europa Cinemas prize at the Venice Film Festival, it is a delightful blend of sensitivity, intelligence, humor, and magical realism that transforms the simple truths of childhood into cinematic poetry.
